I'd like to get a decent water filter/purifier without breaking the bank (I'd like to keep it under $100 if possible). Does anyone have any recommendations on what to get or look for, and best places to purchase?

REI might be a good place to start. Mine is a Katadyne so that probably doesn't fit with your budget. I have heard that the MSR water works is a good filter. Whichever one you decide on I would suggest that it have a ceramic element for cleaning the water as this will last much longer than other medium...and generally, at least mine when clogged just requires a quick scrub with the included brush to open up some more pores.

Seychelle makes a 30 oz bottle with the filter built in. I love mine enough to buy a second one. Fill from one end, drink from the other. Less bother than pumping. I paid $25 including shipping. I think you can find them retail for like $30. It's good for quite a few refills and it is pretty well documented to be effective. I have a couple of pump filters but I never bother with them any more.

I recommend the Katadyn Guide, it pumps a lot of water in a short time. It could be a little heavy for the ultralight crowd.
