Hmm that is a hard one. The hoh is always a nice go. If you do it, I would probably spend the first day near at about mile 9 near the rangers hold up. Next day Elk Lake, followed by a day hike up to blue glacier and back to Elk lake. Last day, hike from Elk lake out. Better still, would be the coastal hike either from ozette or LaPush up to shi shi. You can check out both these reviews on the site. Other than that, you might consider something on Rainier, since the views are just much better there. John

Based on what you have described I think you will do fine hiking up to camp muir. It isn't a trivial affair to hike up there, but that said, during July it is probably most important to make sure you have protection from the Sun. I know plenty of folks have made there way to Muir in tennis shoes. Not advocating that but not sure that crampons would really be of much benefit since the snowfield is pretty slushy then. At any rate, I think that given decent footwear (boots), hat and sunscreen with some water you should be fine. Maybe the elevation will be a bit trying but you can almost always adapt by slowing down a bit. Hope that helps. John

A friend of mine did this hike last year. I seem to recall that gaters were a good idea since there is a lot of loose unconsolidated material which can get down in your boot. As for hiking poles I would probably also bring them since it is like 4500 ft. I would also use the snow baskets since the material is so loose. John

Sorry my bad  - I don't actually get notified when they are added to the staging system. I did add the ones which were there, and complete.Hopefully when I redesign the ui around some of the features of CF8 things will get better. I would consider Pinnacle Peak at Mt. Rainier. The view from the saddle there is awesome, and is about the distance you are after. Best views in the afternoon. Another consideration might be the Burrows Mtn at Sunrise (in Mt. Rainier Park). Best views in the morning - hence the name Sunrise  Either one would be great. Hope that helps. John

So the voting can be accomplished on the hike review pages, by clicking the vote buttons on the left column below the hike review. However, the best way to do it is to create a review at the bottom of an existing site. As you assign stars and hikers it will go into the best hikes page (the sortable one). Hope that helps. Haven't had as much time as I would like to work on the site. :( John

The usual culprits are Boulder River, RattleSnake Ledge, and Mt. Si. Mt. Si does Ice up later in the season and may have some snow on it near the top now. If you are headed to the Olympics the Coast Hikes will all be good, as will most the western ridge of the Mountains. Really what you are looking for is a low elevation hike. I just tried to sort on that in the data grid and found that it is broken. Will have to fix that. Hope this helps, John

Thanks for the though Brian. I have kinda been putting off overhauling the website for a while. Lately I have been thinking tabout how the next version might look. I don't know much about the GPS waypoint stuff, but I have heard a couple people mention it. I will have to look into it. My main thrust with the next go aroudn will be a cleaner ui and to impove the submission process for hikes. Right now it isn't super attractive, and dealing with multiple uploads is a challenge. Thanks for the comments. And on the difficulty you bring up a good point about its subjectivity. There really isn't a whole lot you can do about it, in my opinion. Sometimes I find difficult hikes easy and easy hikes difficult. This is why I try to provide elevation and distance information. About the most objective measure. Still those topos can hide a lot of ups and downs.  Thanks, John

Hi Reuben - I think the Sunrise area of Mt. Rainier might be what you are looking for. There are several hikes which you could do that aren't too difficult. I would suggest Berkeley Park as a spot for wildflowers, though they will have reached their peak for sure. I would expect some remanants of the wild flowers though I am not sure. There are several nice vistas of Mt. Rainier - but as the name suggests the light is best at Sunrise. As for moss, and large trees I would suggest going to the Hoh in the Olympic National Park. This is on the Western side of the park next to the pacific and can be combind with some nice beach hikes too. September is an ideal month for that - at least in my experience. Sounds like you have a lot planned for not much time. The drive from Seattle to the western park of the Olympic National Park takes about 5 hours. The drive from Seattle to Sunrise takes about 2.5. I am not sure how the North Cascades factors into your plans but would consider narrowing down the locations so you might get to spend more time at fewer of them. As a last bit of advice I would suggest using the hike selector -data grid and sort on mileage or elevation to narrrow down the choices. Here is one which sorts all the Mt. REI might be a good place to start. Mine is a Katadyne so that probably doesn't fit with your budget. I have heard that the MSR water works is a good filter. Whichever one you decide on I would suggest that it have a ceramic element for cleaning the water as this will last much longer than other medium...and generally, at least mine when clogged just requires a quick scrub with the included brush to open up some more pores. I have again updated the navigation to a drillable menu system which remembers what the state of the menu was. Hope it works out well. It won't work for Safari...I expect these users to see the entire list. And yes I did go for a hike last week, and no I haven't put up the reviewe yet. Hoping to do that on Saturday. Thanks, John

Okay so I have made some changes to the site. Most obvious is that the left navigation has been simplified. I am interested to know if you find this change useful, or it the old navigation listing all the hikes down the left margin was better. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, John

Just wanted to give everyone the 411. If you are were thinking of heading up to Sunrise to check out the wildflowers the next couple weeks look to be the time of their first bloom. Check out the Grand Park, Berkeley Park reviews for some of the best places to go. Cheers, John

I would think about either Sunrise or Paradise area hikes. Specifically one which comes to mind it Grand Park which is just a magical place. If you use the mapping funtion on the hike overview pages you should be able to navigate around geographically. Check out some of the pictures. Cheers, John

It would be nice to think that we will have an Indian Summer - though my bet is we won't  Just a guess...we will see.You should submit a review for Rattle Snake Mountain so it can be added to the site. http://www.attrition.ws/index~page~newhike.cfm The UI is pretty simple, just make sure you fill in all the values such as date. The elevation stuff can be derived...and you can always edit it later after it is on the site. Cheers, John
