Got around to buying a new pair of boots. I settled on a midweight pair with gortex liner and nubuck leather uppers. Sales woman told me not to fuss with any conditioning/waterproofing for 3-6 months. What do you think? I bought nikwax cleaner and nubuck leather waterproofer but have only used the cleaner as of yet. How long should I wait to treat with waterproofer, and how often to reapply? Is any other conditioner necessary? I don't care how cool the boots look, discoloration of the leather is not an issue. My main concern is the longevity and waterproofness of the boot. Thanks for any ideas!

Usually the boot come pre conditioned with some form of waterproofing. Wiht my most recent pair of boots I wore them 'as is' for about half a season and then treated them. The way I determine if they need to be treated is whether they absorb water into the leather. Mine aren't goretex, instead they are nubuck leather. When I see the leather actual get wet, I treat them so the water no matter if I am stepping in a stream leaves the boots immediatly upon exit. I haven't noticed any change in the leather on any of the boots I have used. The most noticeable thing, is the suppleness of the boot. If your boots are too rigid to be comfortable, you might consider applying wax to them.... Other than that I would wait for 6months or so.

John
