I saw a small black bear next to Eunice Lake along the TOlmie Peak trail yesterday. I wasn't fast enough to get a picture but it was way cool to see him. My first bear sighting ever!!!

I own a pair of Atlas and I love them. The straps for the binding allow them to articulate, making it easier to cross a slope laterally. Unlike MSR, the decking is not plastic, making them quieter on the icier trails. One drawback I noticed while summiting Bandera last winter was that the slope was icy and my Atlas shoe slid more as I was decending, my friend had the MSR Denali and his have better rails underneath that bite into the ice better. Due to the angle of the slope, I took off my shoes and ended up lunge stepping my way down so I wouldn't slip and fall down the mt.

I found that I prefer boots. More support and I feel more comfortable hiking over talus knowing that my ankles are more protected.
