Welcome to attrition yonsosa! I think that is a good point. It is just about personal responsibility. While we make improvements in technology that make us safer, we let society take a larger role in providing us with security and take less and less responsibility for our actions. ie: I spilled the hot coffee you sold me so I am going to sue you! It's just that we go into the mountains to get away from civilization, so why can't that aspect of civilization stay out of our wilderness?

Or does any one else get tired of hearing how DANGEROUS Big Four ice caves are? I've been going to them for about 30 years, at least a couple dozen times, and explore as much as I can each time. Yeah I know some people have been killed there and I mean no disrespect but... GEEZ! Should we close down anyplace somebody dies? Mt. Rainier? Sorry somebody died here no more climbing. Mt Hood? After decades of thousands of people climbing every year, now they don't want you on the mountain without a personal locator device! Come on, you are out in the (so-called) wilderness. Take responsibility for yourself and get over it. With all the improvement in gear and other technology, the wilderness is safer than it ever has been. Yeah, you could die at the Ice caves. How much more likely is it you will die in your car on the way there? I-5 closed because somebody might die!!!!
Thank you, that is all.

Hi, richmor Good to see a new user on the boards Daily NW forest passes are available at many retail locations. (most mini-mart type stores near hiking areas sell them) Here is a link to the national forest website with a retail location search. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/passespermits/vendors.php

Hey John The changes are great. It sure beats having to scroll all the way past the list of hikes to get to the content at the bottom of the page. That was always a problem for my browser was in anything other than full screen. Thanks, and keep up the good work. Derek

The Mountain Loop Hwy outside of Granite Falls has a great selection of lower elevation hikes. Try this one, it has a number of railroad tunnels to explore along with great scenery along the Stilliquamish River http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/recreation/activities/trails/drd/old_robe.htm

The PI this morning said it had lost the battle with gravity. It grew enough to remain the same height, but about one third broke off.

Smartwool ROCKS! I bought three pairs and loved them. Yeah they were expensive. It seems like they are not too durable, mine have not got runs, but they get a lot of those fuzzy little balls on them. I wear them all the time and they make my feet feel great. Bought five more pairs on ebay for $40

I bought a Mountain Hardware gore tex bivy sack last year. I had not used it but knew I would need it if I was going to do any serious peak bagging. Well I had it with me on a snowshoe hike at Hurricane Ridge in March. Long story short, we got in a whiteout and ended up spending the night unplanned. I was AMAZED at the difference it made! No sleeping bag, just the bivy. The temps dropped into the low twenties and I was never uncomfortably cold, I was not warm by any means, but I would definitely keep you alive in an emergency. And it weighs less than 2lbs, packs into a stuff sack that is 8"x3". I won't leave home without it

Hey John, you have a great site with an awesome database of Washington hikes Lots of potential here, I hope it catches on. Spingtime is here and maybe people are getting in the mood to get out in the mountains.

Hiked into this hot spring just outside of Salt Lake City on vacation last year, too bad we were there in the summer. http://www.climb-utah.com/WM/fifth.htm

My climbing/hiking partner of 20 plus years, (since teenagers) blew out his knee and is only able to do short moderate hikes. Bad timing, last year was slow and I spent the winter buying new gear and getting ready to hit it. Now I just need someone interested in doing some challanging routes. Stuff like Vesper Peak, The Brothers, Ingalls Peak etc. Scrambles, 4th class, low 5th class. Send me a message and we can talk. Derek

Anybody see the photos of the new slab in the crater of Mt St Helens in the paper today. Just let it cool for a few years and it's the best new crag in WA. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/6600ap_wst_mount_st_helens.html

Seems like this site gets a fair number of hits. People are viewing the posts. It's just that nobody is posting! So I challenge anybody out there to knock me off the list of most recent posts.
